Bunaken
Bunaken National Marine Park is located at the northern tip of the island of Sulawesi. The park boasts an area of 890.65 km of whick only 3% is terrestrial : Bunaken Island, the islands of Manado Tua, Mantehage, Nain and Siladen.
Bunaken’s seascape is decorated with a high diversity of coral, fish, and sponges. Notably, seven of the eight species of giant clams that exist in the world are found in Bunaken. The waters are incredibly colorful with the presence of around 20.000 marine biotas including 390 species of coral, over 33 species of butterflyfish, many different types of groupers, damsels, wrasse, and the bulging-eyed gobies. Dr. Mark Erdmann even recorded finding a living coelacanth, a 60 milion year old fish species, in Bunaken.
The vibrant life found in Bunaken’s waters is due to the northeast currents that flow through the park hitting a counter current, an intersection that is believed to trap larvae. The marvelous seascape also boasts great visibility of 20 to 40 meters almost all year round, making it a diver’s paradise.
Having such abundant marine biodiversity, it is no wonder that Bunaken is one of indonesia’s most famous diving areas. Bunaken offers dives for all levels of certification ; asvanced divers who like a challenge can ride the strong currents along steep walls and enjoy watching the big fish feeding, while less experienced divers can visit diverse gardens of coral in calm, clear waters.
