Raja Ampat
Nampele
Raja Ampat, or “Four Kings”, is an area comprised of a multitude of islands and is famous for its high biodiversity. This is one of the world’s best diving destinations, despite its limited infrastructural development. It is has also increasingly gained attention amongst marine biologists for its incredible, complex, and well preserved marine ecosystems.
The islands in Raja Ampat are spread over a vast area, and so diving here is best done from a boat if one wants to explore them properly. There are 40Liveaboards that operate regularly in Raja Ampat, but, if you are in need of terra firma, there are also excellent resorts available around Waisai and Misool islands.
To dive in Raja Ampat, foreign visitors must buy a year’s permit for a fee of IDR 500.000 for foreign visitors and IDR 250.000 for domestic visitors. This fee is used to finance conservation efforts and community projects. Information centers where you can pay the entrance fee to Raja Ampat can be found in Sorong, West Papua , and in Bali. You can also purchase the permit from any liveaboard or any land-based dive operator.
Raja Ampat offers dives of good visibility, with a minimum of 20 metres, and waters are teeming with a staggering variety of marine life. In the north, sites such as this can be found around the Dampier Strait. The dive resorts are mostly located in this area.
Waisai, the capital city of the Raja Ampat Regency, is located at the heart of the Dampier Strait. In the south, diving is centered around the misool area, with coral gardens full of pelagic special, mantas, colorful reef fish and sometimes marine mammals.
If you wish to encounter schools of fusilier, jacks, snappers, and anthias then Sardine Reef , Mike’s Point, The Passage, Cape Kri, and Mansuar Reef are the places to dive. Pygmy seahorses are normally hiding within the polyps of the Gorgonians in the area. There shy wobbegong shark also can be spotted here. The wobbegong shark may look calm and approachable but it is strongly suggested that they are left alone; they can be dangerous when disturbed.
Saunek Island is the area’s centre of muck diving. Here, in the shallow waters under the jetty, you can find the wonderpus, a species of mimic octopus that has adapted its camouflage technique, mastering the ability to shape –shift, mimicking the form of other fish in order to avoid predators. There are also ghost pipefish, mantis shrimp, and crocodilefish waiting to be found.
In the west, around the Arborek Islands, school of mantas gather. At Manta Points close to Arborek, the current runs fast and smooth; making it the perfect playground for these elegant creatures, where the strong current feeds them with an abudance of plankton.
