Ternate
Stepping off the plane in Ternate you are greeted by the grand, volcanic Mount Gamalama sitting peacefully beside the vast ocean. Located right in the middle of the Coral Triangle, the Indo-Pacific Ocean blesses this area with rich marine biodiversity.
One of the fantastic things about Ternate is that you don’t have to spend hours at sea to reach a great spot, as even the shallow sites hold enchanting corals and life. In these pristinely clean waters are numerous types of dives, from gantle slopes lined with dense coral reefs and drop offs, to pinnacles, walls shallow reefs and bays that are home to creatures like the pygmy seahorse. Even the night diving is good here in Ternate, with the city lights shining upon the surface of the water. Excellent sites can be found behind the Grand Mosque and in front of Floridas Restaurant.
This place is also rich in historical and archeological landmarks. Even avid divers keen to spend hours underwater shouldn’t neglect Ternate’s terrestrial attractions: The Sultan Ternate Mousque, a highlights of Indonesia architecture; the Toluko Fort, built by the Portuguese; Sultan Ternate Palace where historical artifcats are stored; Batu Angus, a lava boulder from Mount Gamalama, nestled in the middle of the sea; and Sulamadaha Beach, which offers fun snorkeling experiences, or just a fantastic place to soak up the sun.
