Selayar
Selayar is an island south of Sulawesi. Geographically, most of the Selayar Islands Regency is waters, blessed with almost unlimited diving potential. On arriving in Makassar International Airport, you can fly to Benteng Airport on Selayar and then drive to the dive resort. However, there are other alternatives for those who wish to see more of Sulawesi. One is to take a scenic, 180-kilometer journey by road to a city called Bira in southern Sulawesi, then a two-hour boat ride to Selayar.
Diving in Selayar is concentrated on the eastern part of the island where the accommodation and dive facilities are located. Most of the dive sites are scattered around the resorts and take between 10 minutes and one hour to reach. Haus Riff (I & II) is located right in front of the resort area and is a great way to begin your Selayar diving experience, before exploring the steep and impressive wall, the bottom of which is swallowed by the dark waters below. Its seascape is dominated by sea fans hanging from the vertical drop, and picture-perfect sea sponges. Sometimes divers can see pygmy seahorses hiding, camouflaged within the sea fans.
In a number of locations, where conservation efforts are being made to repair and protect damaged reefs, schools of fusilier, snapper, and sometimes tuna, mantas, eagle rays and sharks can be seen passing by.
